Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
At Lowton West Primary School, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is an integral part of our broad and balanced curriculum. We believe that every child deserves an education that prepares them not only for academic success but also to thrive as well-rounded individuals in modern society. Pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos and embedded within our daily practice.
PSHE is fundamental to the development of the whole child. Through high-quality, progressive PSHE education, we support pupils to understand how they are developing personally and socially, while promoting their mental, physical and emotional wellbeing. We equip children with the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to stay safe, build positive relationships, develop resilience, make informed decisions and become independent, responsible, healthy and confident members of society.
Our curriculum is carefully designed to be developmental and progressive. From the moment children join our school, they begin to develop their emotional literacy, learning to recognise, name and talk about their feelings. This understanding develops year by year, helping pupils to manage their emotions, build resilience and make choices that support their own wellbeing and that of others.
Citizenship is an important part of our PSHE curriculum. We encourage pupils to understand their role within our school, their local community and the wider world. Children learn about their rights and responsibilities, respect, equality and inclusion, as well as how their actions can have a positive impact on others. Pupils are given opportunities to develop their voice, contribute to decision-making and take an active role in school and community life.
PSHE is embedded throughout our school culture and is not limited to regular, timetabled lessons. Through the wider curriculum, enrichment activities, our school values, relationships and everyday interactions, children are provided with opportunities to develop their physical, social, emotional and cultural understanding. They also demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual Respect, Rule of Law and Liberty.
By placing PSHE at the heart of school life, we aim to create a safe and inclusive environment where every child feels valued, respected and able to thrive. We work in partnership with families, recognising the important role that parents and carers play in supporting children's development, health and wellbeing. Together, we prepare our pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of childhood, adolescence, adulthood, work and active citizenship.

At Lowton West Primary, we follow the Jigsaw approach to deliver PSHE, including RSE and HE. We supplement the Jigsaw scheme and adapt the lessons taught to meet the needs of our children and school community, supplementing the scheme with sessions and workshops including POL-ED, NSPCC and HH Kids workshops.
